Speed

Every creature (whether biological, robotic, vehicular, or any combination of the three) has a speed, which is the distance that creature can move in their optimal mode (walk, climb, hop, swim, fly, slither, or crawl) in one round (roughly 6 seconds).

The creature’s optimal mode is referred to as a stock move. For humans, the stock move is walk, and their speed is 10. This means that their walking (or running, or dashing) speed is 10 metres in a round.

Many humans can actually move between 5 and 8 metres in a second, but this is at their sprinting speed, and only after they have built their speed up. In combat, however, you don't have a run-up, rather you are moving in short bursts, within a six-second period, and often under a life-threatening situation.

While the walk move for humans is a stock move mode, they are able to undertake additional moves, which are classed as half moves or quarter moves. Half and quarter moves are given these names, because they are undertaken at half and quarter speeds, respectively. In the case of humans, they are able to climb, crawl and swim. All of these are quarter moves, so they are done at a quarter of their speed. Given that a human's speed is 10, their walk, crawl and climb moves are made at a speed of 2 (2.5 rounded down).

This is all represented in the human's speed trait property:
