The Event
Going by many names including the Dragon's Breath and the Fissure, the Event was a quantum-mechanical event instigated by the the First Golem of Neolod in it's first few seconds of fully operational life. According to the Cyborgs of Krea, the purpose was most likely two-fold:
-
Principally as a means of self-preservation. Part of dimensional manipulation allows the creation of daughter universes and the use of sister ones. This offers space to base many of the computer's operations out of harms way. In study, the Cyborgs have been able to seperately identify 374 distinct universes owing to their slightly differing physical laws (as reflected in the various logic operations). Owing to the Golem's connectedness, the Cyborgs no-longer find it necessary to travel to Earth in order to join the network and wean this data. Rather they can enter at any position in space where a hyper-space gate to the Golem exists (say in the microprocessor of any Alpha being).
-
Secondly, the event was an experiment and a means of heightening the Golem's awareness of the universe at large. The Golem found it necessary to improve its quantum-mechanical thinking rather than being satisfied at being a quantum-utilising, chaos thinker (a constraint shared with that of organic life). The benefit of this lay in the controlled simultaneous investigations of many quantum possibilities at once. As a result, the Golem of Neolod became the only known quantum substrate processor.
In the Event, the Golem achieved a quantum fracturing on a grand scale. Its study area encompassed life itself and gathered millions of universes while creating many others. this gave the Golem the opportunity to observe many life outcomes over extended periods of time. In creating many universes this life was allowed to develop without the interference of observations of other forms nearby.
In practical terms, this meant the complete removal of objective or ubiquotous time on Earth. While the majority of the planet experienced normal time (about a hundredth of a second), each seperated part of the studied section experienced a distorted time (numbering into millions of years in some cases). The Guild has identified 1520 seperate areas of study from physical data:
- scoring and searing marks from cosmic strings and isolated singularities,
- measurements of evolutionary budgets in flora and fauna,
- borders between differing weathering and geological activity, and
- contrasting geophysical ageing data between geochemically and proximally identical rocks.
These are often as small as a couple of acres, or as large as the Cumberland Belt (the area containing both Quatzeletamaine and Eporrhynchus - ageing about 800 years).
All the outside world saw of the Event was a very breif phase of high activity. It was, however a very significant event for all life on Earth for several reasons:
- Immediately after the event, the outsider was able to observe a vastly uplifted and broken landscape in south-eastern Australia. Much of the land had been faulted and three major mountain blocks had emerged:
- The most northerly were the Antarctic Mountains these expanded west over part of the Artesian Basin effectively splitting it into two areas. They represent upturned crust from intense gravity sutures that were enacted over most of the area for some 200,000 years in relative time.
- The second group struck down the western edge of the Great Dividing Range as the Slough Mountains.
- Containing some of the highest peaks, are a narrower belt extending from the western Antarctics to the southern highlands of the GDR. The three ranges inscribe a triangle of down thrust land of wet swamps and forests now known as Scap Fallow Green. The southernmost peaks lie on an east west axis moving east from the Southern Highlands out to sea. These, in fact, trace out the southernmost expression of what are known collectively as the Frames. These are a collection of east west trending ridges crossing much of the influenced area at 60 to 70 kilometre intervals.
- Seismic activity has been persisting right accross the indo-pacific plate ever since.
- The mountain building and nuclear explosions are likely to have combined to trigger the onset of a new ice age which has been in effect ever since.
- The sudden onset of cold and the migration of seperated fauna caused many mass-extinctions in the microworlds as they were once again subjected to outside influences. This also marks the end of the Eporrhynchine and Geopooreen civillisations (earth quakes, sudden cold etc). Highly evolved flora and fauna (many being GELF descendants) have been moving outward of the Event area ever since.
- The combined influences of the above caused the flight of much of western humanity to space.
Part of the enigma that surrounds the Event lies in the extraordinary cultures that have come out of it.
