The Groombridge Rift is a void in space and represents both a navigational challenge for fuel constrained strikers and part of the core-tailward border between the territories of House Yorkin and House Kline. Van Maanen’s Star, the main location for this adventure is 9 lightyears south of the only major system in this sector.

Groombridge 34
The low metallicity red dwarfs constituting this widely separated binary, sport many smallish planets high in carbon and silicates, while relatively low in iron and magnesium. This system has always been economically linked to the the nearby Ross 248 of the Kruger Sector. Groombridge 34’s less intensely flaring stars, make it a more desirable civilian habitat, and Ross 248 is its industrial and mining counterpart.
Kruger 60
Kruger is a young system with a relatively high metallicity, which has given rise to sizeable terrestrial systems around both stars. The closeness and eccentricity of the orbital elements of the stars, have cleared off the icy planets, with the outer most members of both stars being extensive belts of rocky planetesimals.
Kruger supports the most extensive mining facilities for several surrounding sectors. This has given rise to both a sizeable civilian population as well as an extensive shipwright industry.
Ross 248
Ross 248 supports a vast complex of mining and refinery facilities, while its metallicity is low, making it poor in some of the heavier elements, this same feature has resulted in a large array of very small planets, including an interesting transitional terrestrial/ice giant planet called Clang.
The planets themselves are very geologically active and Ross 248, itself is a powerful flare star. These two factors make habitation fairly undesirable.
Gravel
A dark and miserable place filled with ancient fusion reactors, some of which still work. Mining takes place in the darkness on the many dwarf planets that race around the rogue jovian planet Jodril.
Gravel gets its name from the vast belts of loosely bound, ice coated, rocky planetesimals that ring the system.
Kovachek
The Kovachek wreck is the location of a Rift Wars battle; its remains loosely orbit the 7 jupiter-mass failed star. There is generally little activity here, owing to the relative unavailability of local power. Scavengers work away in the dark, fending off other scavengers and pirates.
