Also known as the stoats or the wombats, freens were the first extant alien civilisation contacted by the Terrans of Guild Space, however evidence abounded, even then of past contact with the Ronites of Xannia
The baseline Freen is a stocky bipedal humanoid, standing between 1.0 and 1.3 metres in height. They have a rounded skull with wide-set eye holes and large nasal development. Their mandible is long and narrow and under cuts two large incisor teeth on the maxillae. The incisor teeth are only partially visible because of the philtrums (upper lips). Freens are covered with short fur, assisting them with heat and cold tolerance. Their superficially mammalian appearance, and bipedal lateral symmetry is attributed to convergent evolution, rather than any common ancestry to terrestrial mammals. They have an ornithine biochemistry (as opposed to the proline biochemistry of clavians and humans) and are entirely alien, beyond these superficial similarities.
There is very little sexual dimorphism between the two biological sexes, owing mostly to their gender fluidity. Instead, there are many cultural artefacts surrounding their notions of gender, and through various genetic alterations, some cultural enclaves have caused some individuals to fix a particular gender for life.
Freens have a tendency toward collectivism, showing very little interest in individual agency. Indeed, their sense of identity is more strongly aligned with the group to which they belong, rather than themselves. This social setting facilitates larger and more cohesive societies than humans have been able to muster, and has driven rapid technological advancement. It has also meant that adorning themselves with fancy titles, clothes and jewellery and amassing personal wealth is not of great interest to them. Their titles in society are very descriptive of function, and making a big show of personal grandeur would be viewed as slightly perverse.
