Science is primarily used through the know and research actions.
Know (free-act)
In a free action, you can recall:
- knowledge specific to animals, plants or fungi, including xenobiology and genetics.
- something specific about subjects in astrophysics, such as stars, cosmology or black holes
- electricity, magnetism, mechanics and materials.
Research (hrs+)
The research action on this skill is usually performed with Scan-Tools, but some of the engineering tools are also useful here:
Use Scan-Tools to perform diagnose in order to:
- trace the origin of microflora and fungal spores;
- determine the origin of landforms, whether natural or artificial, the stability of foundations for bridges, mines or other construction;
- trace the origins of silt or mud residues;
- determine the location and concentration of metallic ores, ground-based water sources, the likelihood of earthquakes or volcanic activity; or
- process various physics components in crime scene investigations, such as ballistics, crash trajectories, or blood splatters.
Use Gene-Tools to identify microbes, or genetic codes, manufacturing origin, even in history.
Enabler
Two of the knowledge skills, Antiquities and Science, are part of a rare type of skill called an enabler. These skills, apart from providing their own benefits, enable other skills, by allowing you to add half your enabler skill ranks to any roll made on the enabled skill.
