Description: Encompasses understanding of chemistry, materials, construction, hulls, bulkheads, armour and fields.

This skill embodies your understanding of solids, liquids and gases, their properties, chemical composition and reactivity. The applications of this skill include:

  • construction and construction systems
  • vehicle and habitat hulls
  • melee weapons, and any non-firearms
  • armour
  • bulkheads and powered doors
  • life-support systems
  • power and matter storage and conveyance
  • mining processes

There is some overlap with the Munitions skill, particularly in the area of explosives.

As a materials engineer, you understand many processes, for example construction and structural engineering, and you deeply understand how power and materials are generated, stored, transferred and used.

The Materials engineering skill is the one of the two pillars of schema building (the other being Neuronetics).

Actions on this skill, other than the Know action, will usually require Material-Tools to complete. While the purchase of Material-Tools incurs a cost, having ranks in Materials provides you with a rank in Material-Tools (meaning you’re qualified).
