Interrogate (Investigate)

Properties

Base(s): Investigate
Usage: substitution(min+, 1fp) -> chk(C,interrogate)= +M -> set(SC)= 8 +M*(Deceive) +R*
Description: Practice in interviewing a creature to elicit information from them that they are unwilling to give.

This technique extends Investigate when a psychological element comes into the examination of an individual. The investigative element concerns what questions to ask, in what order to try to discern the truth. Interrogation is a systematic approach to a social contest.

Success in an Interrogate check is best done either:

  • the subject overcoming the interrogator's SC with a passive pasv(Insight);
  • the subject, understanding the situation and using a normal chk(Insight) - an opposing roll;
  • the subject, who also has ranks in Interrogate, attempts to turn the tables, by first overcoming the SC, then setting their own SC back on the interrogator with either chk(Deceive) or chk(Interrogate).

The last case reflecting the idea that the subject might know the tricks of the trade, and is benefitted by the fact that they can pick which skill leads to be best overall modifier, in either case though, the defence will cost 1fp.

Interrogate can be covered in a single, opposed roll, or multiple rolls. What must be decided is the web of information involved, as in: what items of information does the interrogator want to know?, what items of information is the target willing to divulge?

Success in using this technique on a subject can depend on your true intentions not being known to the subject. Here your Deceive skill can assist in mounting a Social Challenge (SC) for the subject to overcome. This is the reason for the set(SC) being based on Deceive and aspected by Interrogate.
